GooPhone
Looks like the GooPhone many people we thinking would come out wont. Turns out the people at Google are smarter than the rest of us, and frankly Im not surprised. The GooPhone isnt just one phone (although that one is pretty sexy), but rather an open-source software platform that could go on many handsets. So there could actually be tens of “GooPhones” on many different carriers.
How is this going to work?
Well, the “Android” software will be created by the Open Handset Alliance. Since the software is open source, geeks will come out of the woodwork to develop for it. They will have the ability to bend the software to their will much easier. I doubt handsets with the Android software will be free in terms of monthly charges, I cant imaging how many ads it would take for that to work. What it will have is Google applications at the core of it. The browser, document creator/browser, email client, etc.
But, why would carriers allow Google into their business? Aren’t they afraid Google will eat their lunch?
Google plans to bring the carriers along by offering a bite of the ad revenue, and by using a “free” OS, they keep costs down (Microsoft should be a little scared). These are good things for the carriers, who we know are low life, scum sucking, money grubbing bastards anyway. Something tells me they are and should be scared Google will eat their lunch.
Why would someone buy an Android based Phone?
Hey, those Google apps are pretty neat. They are featured on the most sexy phone of all, the iPhone for goodness sake. I keep hearing from those lucky enough to have one that the Google maps feature is oh so cool. Once those applications, games and slick interfaces start coming in for the latest phone from HTC, or the Goo version of the Motorola Razr with the promise of much more, and most at the whopping cost of **free**, people look at that Goo based phone pretty hard.
Im glad that Google is getting into the cellphone game, we need it to be shaken up. Apple didnt do it. All they did is get in bed with AT&T and get fleas. Actually I would love it if Google would go through with its threats and buy the 700 mHz range. Some think its a bad idea for Google to buy the spectrum, but I dont think they could be any worse than the group we got.
